Usable Products conducted multiple suites of usability testing before and after the launch of D&B's Small Business Solutions web site in 2001 and 2002. The iterative testing strategy enabled D&B to track customer experience as the site evolved through the addition of new functionality.
D&B engaged Usable Products to design new functionality for the Search user interface. Usable Products also was engaged for iterative usability testing when improvements to D&B's eBIR (electronic Business Information Report) product were introduced.
UPC discovered through user testing that many searches were initially performed in Arkansas. Note the default entry in theState/Prov field.

Based on our suggestions, the state selector was repositioned and the last state used was selected automatically.

Two issues with this design were discovered in user testing: 1) the user interface did not draw attention to the new dual search modes feature. 2) Identifying and switching between modes was difficult.

The radio buttons of the previous design was replaced by a tabbed user interface. In user tests this interaction proved to be more successful at drawing attention to the added functionality and indicating which type of search was being conducted.
